Watkins Maintains the Edge - But Calvert-Lewin Might Still Secure the International Squad

Only one goal in his initial ten English top division games this season had many wondering whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's peak were in the past.

Yet, a only four weeks afterwards, he stands as the most discussed attacker in England after netting 7 goals in 6 back-to-back games.

His most recent strike, in a stalemate against Sunderland, elevated his season's haul to eight, establishing him as the highest English scorer in the Premier League so far this season.

A Remarkable Return to Form

The 28-year-old joined Leeds United on a Bosman move in the summer, following a nine-year stint with Everton that was hampered by setbacks in its final stages.

But, the numbers underpinning his revival in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 system are truly notable.

His six-match scoring streak puts him in exclusive company as just the 11th English player to score in six or more consecutive Premier League outings.

To put that into perspective, even England captain Harry Kane was unable to produce a run of this length - his top is two distinct five-match runs.

And the only English striker to surpass Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who embarked on an eight-game scoring spree for Leicester City in 2019.

The Secret to the Scoring Form?

Why has Calvert-Lewin so tough to stop in the past month? A recent opponent's manager explained it succinctly.

"He has the perfect timing," the manager remarked. "He's smart and a excellent striker and he found the timing to arrive at the perfect moment."

That natural ability and positional sense inside the penalty area was what turned him into a popular figure at his previous club.

Pundits note the formation change to a 3-5-2 as a significant factor, enabling more players to enter the box and occupy defenders, which has given the striker a little more space.

"He is a classic centre-forward," noted a former professional. "For the goal... it was a lovely little flick beyond the keeper, a classic centre-forward's goal."

"I've experienced a lot since then. Lots of highs and lots of downs. A test of character and I've persevered and kept going... I've backed myself and now I'm reaping the rewards."
