Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
