The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
