The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
