The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner Unilever blocked the launch for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, announced how he will personally create this new product as part of an individual collection highlighting issues the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent development escalates the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain how the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen announced through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades of involvement, citing worries that its independence had been compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
