The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
