Five days after Hurricane Melissa hit the island's west coast with unprecedented strength, locals in affected areas by the shoreline are persistently anticipating for assistance.

Numerous thoroughfares are blocked by debris and communities are stranded with scarce supplies, lacking utilities, and uncertainty about recovery timelines.

Increasing Casualties

Officials reported on recently that a minimum of 28 persons in Jamaica have perished after the storm struck as a devastating Category 5 hurricane with nearly 300 km/h wind speeds.

That is a near 50% jump in the casualty count recently, and figures may increase as authorities make progress into previously inaccessible areas in the next few days.

Area-Specific Damage

The Westmoreland region is thought to contain the second-most instances of unconfirmed deaths, after St Elizabeth to the south east. The hurricane's center made landfall around the adjacent regions. Within that parish an approximately nine out of ten houses have been destroyed.

"Everyone here is ruined," he stated. He said the boat house was destroyed and is now "completely gone"

"Melissa take everything down," he revealed, including his fishing boat, which he describes as "thoroughly damaged"

Located below the structure of a heavily ruined edifice, Roy Perry said he has experienced complete loss, but "we must maintain belief and optimism remains"
