The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as ālively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help peopleā.
āHow is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?ā a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. āHe shielded me because he wished to be near me,ā she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
āThis cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,ā the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Childrenās Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an āabsolute bloodbath,ā but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a āstroke of luckā he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard āa large numberā of gunshots.
āI thought it was rubber bullets, but itās gone into my own skin and into my leg,ā he explained. āIāve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. Iām ok.ā
