The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
