The Gunners' boss remains confident that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues following disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz will not return for a few more weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

The German forward has been out since August following knee surgery. Originally slated to be available earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player hit a snag when increasing his recovery and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“Our experience helped us build a team that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” Arteta said.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This news leaves a tactical puzzle for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is available following a lengthy absence.

Fitness Doubts Remain

More doubts involve centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Chelsea match. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in the backline for the Premier League front-runners.

The manager is convinced the £250m spend on new players ahead of this season has resulted in a much stronger position to handle such setbacks.

In response if increased squad depth was benefiting their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, because this season has been worse in the attacking line, and now the problems with the backline,” he continued.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we need to utilize players in different positions, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel is just the best one.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Addressing the complication previously mentioned by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided more insight. “He followed all protocols. He failed to advance to the next level and now the signs are like we have unlocked that.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to have him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I value highly for his contributions to the team, but his personality, his nature. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”
