Line of Duty Announced for 7th Season on the British Broadcaster

Line of Duty cast members
Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the popular police drama

The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
