Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to back former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a āsnake and a untruthful personā and alleging of having āa history of marginalizing Black political contenders.ā Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, revealing he now intends to support Cuomo in areas where he holds strong support.
āI think that it is imperative to energize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this race is,ā Adams commented.
He added, āResidents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and Iām going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and Iām going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.ā
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention internationally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would reject Adamsās endorsement if extended.
Months ago, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, āIāll be with Andrew later today.ā
The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicksā first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
