California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom remarked when asked about seriously considering a presidential run post the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he emphasized that any determination is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
The California governor has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, leveraging his digital presence and pushing a proposition that would boost the party's congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to pull federal funds from California and threatened revoking the state's ability to provide CDLs.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, in the wake of a this week's tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen trucker that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was withholding $40 million from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office responded in a recent comment responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Political Future
A recent study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has increased to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an average of previous highs to current figures.
In previous months, Newsom stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
