Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
